Living with unanswered prayers for a child
Questions we hear often, answered with honesty and care.
God's silence doesn't mean His absence. Throughout Scripture, faithful people experienced seasons where they couldn't sense God's presence—Job, the psalmists, even Jesus in Gethsemane. His presence and His perceivable presence aren't the same thing. The silence is real, painful, and valid. And it's also a space where a different kind of faith—faith not dependent on feeling—can grow.
Yes. Absolutely yes. The Bible is full of doubters—Thomas, John the Baptist, even believers in Hebrews 11. Doubt in the context of real suffering isn't a sin; it's honest. God can handle your questions, your anger, your "why." What matters is that you bring these feelings to God rather than burying them. Lament is prayer.
We wish we had a timeline for you. We don't. What we know is that healing, restoration, and answered prayers don't follow our schedules. But we also know that God is with you in the waiting. There are people who've waited decades and found God's faithfulness. There are others who've seen turnarounds in months. The season you're in has a purpose—to deepen your trust, to reveal God's character, and to shape you into who you're becoming.
Real faith isn't about being strong. It's about holding on even when you're barely holding on. Some of the strongest believers are those who fall apart, cry out to God, and stay. You don't have to have it together. You don't have to be inspirational. You just have to keep showing up to God—confused, angry, questioning, and all.
Yes. Absolutely. Seeking therapy isn't a lack of faith—it's stewardship of your mental health. God works through many means: Scripture, prayer, community, AND professional help. If you're struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, or even just processing complex emotions, a licensed therapist can be an invaluable part of your healing journey.
No. Anger at God is not sin—it's honesty. The Psalms are full of angry prayers, laments, and accusations toward God. God can handle your rage. In fact, bringing your anger to God in prayer is far healthier than burying it or directing it at others. God's big enough to receive your anger, and sometimes expressing it is the pathway to deeper trust and peace.
Community is healing medicine. Look for Bible studies, church small groups, faith-based support groups, or even online communities of people walking through similar seasons. Don't minimize the value of even one trusted friend or mentor. You don't need a large community—you need people who understand, won't judge your questions, and will sit with you in the silence without rushing you to "get over it."
Faith isn't measured by how much you believe, but by where your faith is placed. You don't need stronger faith—you need faith in a stronger God. A mustard seed of faith placed in Jesus is enough. Your weakness is actually the space where God's strength shows up most powerfully. Stop comparing your faith to others. Your journey is uniquely yours.
God is always listening, but His answers don't always look like what we expected. Sometimes the answer is "yes," sometimes "no," and sometimes "wait." Trust doesn't depend on hearing an audible voice or seeing immediate results—it's about believing that God hears you and that He loves you, even when you can't see the outcome. Your prayers matter, and they're changing you even when the circumstances aren't changing yet.
Listen without trying to fix it. Don't offer empty platitudes or spiritual clichés. Don't say "God has a plan" or "everything happens for a reason"—these can feel dismissive to someone in pain. Instead, sit with them, validate their pain, ask thoughtful questions, and show up consistently. Bring a meal, send a text, pray with them (not at them), and let them know they're not alone. Your presence is often more powerful than your words.
Bitterness is a natural response to prolonged pain, loss, or injustice. But left unchecked, it can poison your heart and steal your peace. Acknowledge it without judgment. Consider talking to a counselor or spiritual director about it. Forgiveness isn't about condoning what happened—it's about releasing the grip that anger and resentment have on your soul. This is slow work, and it's worth it.
Sometimes, yes. If you're burned out, hurt, or just need to step back and breathe, that's valid. God won't abandon you if you miss church for a season. But be mindful of isolation—it can deepen depression and distance you from support. Consider what "taking a break" looks like for you. Maybe it means skipping church but keeping a small spiritual practice, or being honest with one trusted friend about where you are. Your relationship with God is deeper than any single practice.
